Scott McTominay’s Iconic Goal Featured on Limited Edition £20 Note

Scott McTominay’s remarkable overhead kick against Denmark has been transformed into a limited edition £20 banknote by the Bank of Scotland.

Inspired by the former Manchester United midfielder’s sensational strike that propelled Scotland to its first World Cup in 28 years, the note features unique imagery reflecting this historic moment.

BBC News reports that only 100 of these notes have been printed. Half of them will be available to the public through a mix of collector auctions, a prize draw, and two special pop-up vault experiences in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the homelessness charity, Crisis Scotland.

The design creatively blends traditional banknote features with imagery from the goal that marked Scotland’s return to major tournament football.

Scott McTominay’s World Cup Qualifying Goal Honoured on £20 Banknotes

McTominay scored this stunning overhead kick early in a 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park in November, a pivotal moment that secured Scotland’s place in the World Cup for the first time since France 1998.

Reflecting on this iconic goal, McTominay expressed, “Reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans.”

He added, “Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special.”

The online auction for the notes will remain open until 11:00 on Friday, 26 June, with the prize draw closing simultaneously. The two pop-up vaults will give fans a chance to guess a combination to unlock one of the limited edition notes.

Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, remarked that McTominay’s strike is already considered one of the country’s most treasured goals.

Commenting further on this achievement, she stated, “Securing qualification in such dramatic fashion is a moment fans will never forget, and we wanted to mark it in a way that’s rooted in Scottish identity.”

Noble continued, “Like football, banknotes have long been part of our country’s story, and this limited edition £20 note combines those two traditions with a modern, creative twist.”

Life After Old Trafford for Scott McTominay

For Scott McTominay, this recognition caps a remarkable journey since his departure from Old Trafford.

Sold to Napoli in the summer of 2024, the midfielder has become a prominent figure in Italian football, winning the Serie A MVP and Player of the Season in his debut campaign.

He now sees his most iconic international moment immortalized on Scottish currency.

This situation represents an unusual second act for a player whose exit from Manchester United sparked mixed reactions at the time.

Scotland is set to kick off its World Cup journey against Haiti in Boston on 14th June, followed by matches against Morocco at the same venue on 19th June and Brazil in Miami on 24th June.

The tournament, now expanded to 48 teams, will take place from 11th June to 19th July across 16 cities in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
