Talles Magno could soon shine for New York City FC in his second season with the team. The question will be answered when NYCFC (3-2-2, 11 points) faces Charlotte FC (3-2-2, 11 points) on Saturday at Citi Field. Both teams are currently tied in a four-way battle for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
Magno gained attention as a young player in 2021, helping NYCFC secure the MLS Cup by scoring the decisive goal against Philadelphia Union in the conference finals. The following year, he delivered seven goals and 10 assists.
After a 17-month loan to Brazilian team Corinthians, the 23-year-old has returned but has not yet started an MLS match this season.
Coach Pascal Jansen mentioned, “There’s a few things he needs to take care of. Physically, he’s not at the level yet to compete with the current starters.”
Magno showcased his talent on Tuesday by scoring a hat trick in a 5-2 victory over Westchester SC during the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32.
He said, “I’m working very hard to earn my opportunity to start, considering what’s best for the team. I’m collaborating with Pascal to find out how I can achieve that.”
Meanwhile, Nico Fernandez (five goals), Maxi Moralez (five assists), and Agustin Ojeda (two goals, one assist) are contributing to NYCFC’s offense.
After a strong beginning, NYCFC’s recent form has slipped, with a record of 0-2-1 in their last three MLS matches, including a 2-0 defeat to Vancouver.
On the other hand, Charlotte FC is on a positive trajectory. They went unbeaten in four matches before losing to Nashville SC, 2-1, last week.
Pep Biel leads Charlotte with four goals and two assists, while Archie Goodwin has scored three times. Recently, Charlotte FC cruised to a 6-0 victory over Charlotte Independence in the U.S. Open Cup, with six different players scoring.
Last year, NYCFC eliminated Charlotte FC in the opening round of the MLS playoffs, restricting them to just one goal across three matches. Coach Dean Smith noted, “Some players might carry memories from that. They may have something to prove, but for me, it’s a new season and a new game.”
