England head coach Thomas Tuchel has addressed his controversial decision to exclude Cole Palmer from the final squad for the 2026 World Cup. In a candid statement, Tuchel cited the Chelsea player’s recent decline in form as a primary factor in his decision.
Details: Tuchel did not hold back, mentioning Palmer’s lack of productivity and impact on the pitch compared to previous seasons. He also pointed out that the player had not been consistently available during training camps and had failed to deliver the expected decisive performances.
“Cole Palmer hasn’t been as productive and impactful on the pitch as he was in previous seasons. Moreover, he wasn’t always available to us during training camps and didn’t deliver the decisive performances we expected from him,” British media quote Tuchel as saying.
Additionally, Tuchel highlighted the intense competition within the England squad as a significant reason for Palmer’s omission. He noted that there are currently stronger options for the right-sided ‘number ten’ role, including Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze.
“He’s competing for the right-sided ‘number ten’ role in the half-space, where we’ve opted for Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze. These are outstanding players; they’ve had a better season and have looked far more convincing and valuable in our camps than Cole,” the England boss concluded.
As the tournament approaches, England’s group includes Croatia, Ghana, and Panama.
