John Wenham Praises Jack Chapman for Signing Leeds Teen Oliver Boast
Tottenham Hotspur’s recruitment of 17-year-old Oliver Boast from Leeds United’s academy last summer is proving to be a smart decision. Boast has had a remarkable debut season with the Under-18s, generating significant excitement at Hotspur Way while garnering praise for the club’s youth scouting efforts.
In his first season at Tottenham, Boast has scored 14 goals and provided four assists over 28 Under-18 matches. This follows a promising stint at Leeds, where he netted 10 goals in 20 appearances for their Under-18 team. Instead of slowing down, his progress has accelerated, with steady improvements in his all-around play and increasing versatility across various attacking roles.
Analyst John Wenham lauded Tottenham’s head of academy recruitment, Jack Chapman, for his role in securing Boast, especially given the likely competition from other clubs. He stated (h/t Tottenham News):
“Jack Chapman in recruitment has done a very, very good job so far in terms of bringing Oliver Boast from Leeds, who’s looking fantastic. Not only is he regularly scoring—he got two goals for the 18s against Reading—but his all-around play is improving greatly. I’m curious where his best position will be since he was signed as a striker but has also excelled playing off the right and left. I wonder if he might eventually transition to a number 10 role, given his ability to pick up passes and his determination. He looks like a fantastic addition from Leeds.”
Wenham also highlighted another recruit from Chapman, Oscar Sandiford, a right back signed from Crystal Palace for approximately £400,000. He sees this as further proof of the improving standards in Tottenham’s youth recruitment.
“I think it was around £400,000, and he looked really, really good as well. We are definitely getting better in recruiting young players,” he added.
The discussion about positional flexibility aligns with De Zerbi’s recent comments regarding Archie Gray. The new head coach has expressed his intention to help young players identify their most effective positions, avoiding a scattered focus. Boast’s ability to navigate wide areas while also operating centrally as a number ten makes him the kind of player De Zerbi typically appreciates working with.
A promotion to the Under-21 setup seems to be the next logical step for Boast, with a potential loan to senior football likely in the future. Although the journey from the academy to the first team can be lengthy, Tottenham fans have ample reasons to be optimistic about Oliver Boast’s future prospects.
