Tottenham Draw 1-1 with Leeds, Miss Opportunity to Pull Clear of Relegation Zone
Tottenham Hotspur faced a disappointing 1-1 draw against Leeds United at home on Monday night, keeping them just two points above the relegation zone with two matches to go in the season.
Mathys Tel put Spurs ahead in the second half with a stunning curling shot from the edge of the penalty area. However, Tel later conceded a penalty after a high challenge on Ethan Ampadu, which Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted, ensuring the points were shared. The outcome proved frustrating for Tottenham, denying them a chance to extend their lead over relegation rival West Ham.
Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was the standout performer in the match, making two crucial saves: first stopping a free header from Anton Stach, and later executing a remarkable point-blank save from Sean Longstaff’s powerful shot deep into stoppage time. Joao Palhinha also delivered a solid performance against Leeds.
The defensive midfielder earned a 6/10 rating for his contributions throughout the match. The Portuguese international provided a defensive foundation that allowed teammates Rodrigo Bentancur and Conor Gallagher to advance and create scoring opportunities.
Joao Palhinha Emphasizes Tottenham’s Premier League Standing
Following the 1-1 stalemate, Joao Palhinha expressed his belief that Tottenham “belongs to the Premier League” and voiced confidence in his team’s ability to secure their top-flight status.
“I think it’s been a really tough season, but I think we are much better than most of the teams that are in front of us,” he shared in an interview with HaytersTV.
“The season was not the best, that’s true, but I think this team has all the capacity to turn this situation because we have been showing I think we are improving a lot.
“And yeah, I think we are always fighting for the same, to keep the club in the Premier League because it’s where it belongs.”
Palhinha Supports James Maddison’s Return as Key for Tottenham
James Maddison marked his first competitive appearance in over a year by coming off the bench in the 85th minute. The 29-year-old had been sidelined since suffering an ACL injury during a pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in August 2025.
With Tottenham in search of a winning goal, manager De Zerbi took the chance to include Maddison, and Palhinha believes the England international’s return could significantly boost the team’s survival hopes.
“It’s amazing. First of all, we really miss him. Not just on the pitch, but also in the dressing room with us because he’s a really important player on the pitch and off the pitch,” he noted.
“And he’s a top player. I don’t need to say many things about him because you know, and we are really glad to have him.
“I think it’s important today as well his return to the club, pushing him. I think he also knows that he’s a special player for everyone. And yeah, we count with him for the next two.”
Maddison’s return to action against Leeds provided a welcome sight for Tottenham fans. While the midfielder appeared somewhat rusty on Monday, his presence and experience could prove invaluable as the team heads into the final two games of the season.
