Concerns Over Joao Palhinha’s Future at Tottenham
Joao Palhinha joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan from Bayern Munich with an option to make the move permanent for around €30 million at the end of the season. At that time, the deal was viewed as a clear pathway to a long-term association at White Hart Lane. However, the scenario has changed with Spurs embroiled in a relegation dogfight.
The Portuguese midfielder has struggled to maintain consistency in his game after a bright start to the season. His winning goal against Wolves helped Tottenham secure their first Premier League win of 2026, and there is a belief that Joao Palhinha could turn his N17 career around under Roberto De Zerbi.
Recently, Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund admitted that it is difficult to say whether the North Londoners will activate the buy option in Palhinha’s deal. His words reflected that Bayern Munich are closely monitoring the 30-year-old’s situation, but are not ready to come to any conclusion until Spurs’ fate is sealed.
Negotiations for Palhinha’s Permanent Move Underway
Former scout Mick Brown said earlier this week that Tottenham are negotiating with Bayern Munich over a permanent move for Palhinha behind the scenes.
Now, according to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Palhinha ‘has no future’ at Bayern Munich and now Tottenham ‘could succeed in their plan to sign him for a lesser fee’. The capital-based outfit want to renegotiate the fee to sign him permanently if they remain in the top flight. Bayern want to offload Palhinha permanently as he does not feature in Vincent Kompany’s plans.
“I think it’s pretty certain that he doesn’t have a long-term future at Bayern Munich,” Pete O’Rourke said on the Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast (h/t Football Insider).
“He’s under contract until 2028, but he’s well down the pecking order at the Allianz Arena. I don’t see any way back for him to break into Vincent Kompany’s plans.
“He started the season off pretty well for Tottenham and was a regular starter, but then has probably found himself out of favour since the turn of the year. Everything’s open right now. Spurs don’t know what they can and can’t do in the transfer market due to they don’t know what league they’re going to be in.
“If Spurs stay up and they can renegotiate that buy option, then there’s a real opportunity that Palhinha could extend to stay.”
Tottenham Faces Critical Decision to Keep Palhinha
Palhinha has been impactful off the bench since De Zerbi took charge of the club in March. The experienced Portuguese has a big role to play in Spurs’ survival bid in the coming weeks, especially with the likes of Cristian Romero and Xavi Simons ruled out for the rest of the campaign.
The Lilywhites must stay in the top flight to have a chance of signing the midfield enforcer permanently from Bayern. The Bavarian giants are seemingly clear with their plans of moving on Palhinha from their books, which should give the Hotspur Way chiefs a chance to renegotiate fresh terms.
It remains to be seen whether the ex-Fulham man would like to stay at Tottenham or seek greener pastures.
