Tuchel explains his selection.

England national team head coach Thomas Tuchel has discussed his decision to exclude several key players from the final squad for the 2026 World Cup. He characterized the selection process as a very challenging experience.

Details: Tuchel acknowledged the difficulty of making these choices, emphasizing the importance of squad balance. He mentioned, in reference to his decisions:

“I had to make some tough phone calls. In some cases, it was simply a matter of balance, making sure we don’t take FIVE number tens in the squad. Even though it hurt, I believe it was the right decision for England.” Tuchel said.

Among those excluded from the World Cup squad are notable players such as Harry Maguire, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden, and Cole Palmer, leading to disappointment among supporters of the Three Lions.

As England prepares for the tournament, they will compete in Group L alongside Croatia, Panama, and Ghana.
