On Friday night in Commerce City, Colorado, Kennedy Wesley stood out as a centerback for the U.S. women’s national team during their 3-0 win over Japan. In a game filled with experienced players, the young defender made a significant impact in just 45 minutes.

Head coach Emma Hayes utilized a mix of younger and seasoned players, including Sophia Wilson, Trinity Rodman, Lindsey Heaps, and Rose Lavelle. This combination led to a noticeable improvement in the team’s offense compared to their performance on Tuesday in Seattle. The U.S. consistently challenged Japan’s goalkeeper and created multiple scoring chances, though they struggled to convert.

As the second half began, the U.S. quickly secured their first goal. Wilson’s long-range shot forced a challenging save, resulting in a corner kick. Lavelle served the corner, finding Wesley at the back post. Her header directed the ball perfectly to her centerback partner, Naomi Girma. Wesley had just entered the game as a substitute for Tierna Davidson at halftime.
