Vancouver Whitecaps Prepare for Final Home Match Before Extended Road Trip
The Vancouver Whitecaps will host the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night, marking their last home match until August. The Whitecaps (7-1-0, 21 points) find themselves in second place in the Western Conference and overall league standings, trailing only the San Jose Earthquakes (24 points). Following this match, Vancouver will face an arduous schedule, playing eight consecutive matches on the road as BC Place readies to host seven FIFA World Cup matches. Their next home match will take place on August 1 against Los Angeles FC.
Vancouver has taken full advantage of its early season home games, starting with seven out of their first eight matches played at home. They hold a solid 6-1-0 home record, with their only loss coming on March 21 against San Jose by a score of 1-0. Currently, the Whitecaps are enjoying a three-game winning streak, having outscored their opponents 8-2 during this run.
The team enters the weekend tied with the Earthquakes in league goals scored (22) and goal differential (plus-18). Notable contributors to the scoring include forward Brian White with six goals, former Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller with four goals, and U.S. national Sebastian Berhalter, who has three goals.
On the other side, the Colorado Rapids (4-4-1, 13 points) have showcased significant improvement this season. Sitting in seventh place, the Rapids have managed a record of 1-1-1 in their last three matches.
After defeating Houston 6-2 and narrowly losing to defending MLS Cup champions Inter Miami 3-2 before 75,824 fans at Empower Field at Mile High, Colorado secured a 0-0 draw against Los Angeles FC on Wednesday.
Vancouver’s coach Jesper Sorensen commented on Colorado’s performance, stating, “They’ve been looking very, very good and have grown from game to game. They changed up a lot of stuff since last season. I think they’re heading in a good direction. Obviously, we’d like to make them look a little worse than they did (at LAFC), but that’s up to us.”
In the match against Inter Miami, Lionel Messi scored twice, but the Rapids managed to maintain 61.9% possession and attempted 14 shots compared to Miami’s five. They showcased similar dominance in possession during the draw with LAFC, finishing with 72.5% to LAFC’s 27.5%.
“Another very high-level, technical performance by us,” Rapids coach Matt Wells said regarding the draw. “I thought we played with personality, played with courage, just like we did against Miami. … We’re showing we’re definitely a different team than we’ve been in the past.”
