Spain’s teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal, emerged as the standout performer for La Roja in their recent 2026 World Cup match against Saudi Arabia. The 18-year-old winger not only scored a goal but also expressed profound emotions about the dramatic changes in his life over the past four years.
In a post-match interview, Yamal dedicated his crucial goal to his loved ones, including his mother, girlfriend, friends, and the residents of his home neighborhood, Rocafonda in Mataró. He reflected on his journey, acknowledging the difficulty of grasping the significance of his current situation, given that he was just a regular teenager not long ago.
“At the last World Cup, I was watching the matches on TV right in my school classroom during lessons. And now I’m here, and it’s just incredible. I’m really proud, as are my mother and my whole family,” Lamine shared.
Yamal also defended the team against critics who had prematurely written them off following a shaky start to the tournament. After Spain’s opening match, he noted that many untrue comments circulated, but the team demonstrated resilience, overcame adversity, and regained their winning momentum. The match against Saudi Arabia concluded with a decisive 4-0 victory for La Roja.
