FIFA has announced that clubs can keep players selected for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) until December 15. This extends the earlier deadline of December 8.

This decision will help clubs utilize their players for important domestic and continental matches before the tournament starts on December 21 in Morocco. It is seen as a positive development for clubs. The change follows pressure from European clubs regarding match schedules and player availability.

This new rule allows clubs like Sunderland to field strong squads for crucial matches, such as the Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle, while also complying with FIFA regulations. This move shows FIFA’s willingness to balance the needs of international tournaments with clubs’ concerns. Notable players like Manchester United‘s Mbeumo, Amad, and Liverpool‘s Salah will participate in the Africa Cup of Nations.
