Amorim was let go 14 months after joining from Sporting CP, along with five staff members.

Initially, £10 million was paid to Sporting; the final settlement will depend on contract terms.
Manchester United’s decision to part ways with Ruben Amorim could result in costs up to £15.9 million, as indicated in a recent filing to the New York Stock Exchange.
Amorim was appointed as Manchester United’s head coach in November 2024 but was dismissed on January 5, just 14 months later, after making criticisms about the club’s management following a match against Leeds United. Along with him, five of his coaching staff were also let go.
The filing stated, “A charge of £6.3 million for the write-off of related intangible assets and a provision of £15.9 million, representing the maximum potential future settlement payments, will be recorded in the profit or loss statement for the second half of the year ending June 30, 2026.”
During his time at the club, Amorim managed to secure just 25 wins out of 63 matches, marking the lowest win percentage (38.1%) for a permanent manager. His leadership resulted in a 15th-place finish in the Premier League, the club’s worst performance since 1973-74.
Details on Amorim’s Exit Costs
The £6.3 million mentioned in Manchester United’s filing refers to the remaining compensation owed to Sporting CP for Amorim’s hiring. Previously, the club had paid £10 million to Sporting, as stated in a November 2024 filing.
The £15.9 million represents the maximum potential settlement owed to Amorim and his staff. Reports suggest the actual payment will depend on factors like whether Amorim secures another managerial position.
Despite these financial challenges, Manchester United reported a £32.6 million profit in their second-quarter results by December 31, 2025.
The club has appointed Michael Carrick as interim head coach for the rest of the season. Under his guidance, the team has improved significantly, climbing to fourth place in the league. Manchester United’s next match is against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday.
