Raphael Veiga scored the only goal as Club America defeated the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on Tuesday in Chester, Pennsylvania, in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16.
The teams will play the second leg on March 18 in Mexico City. The winner will face either Nashville SC or Inter Miami in the quarterfinals.
The Union had a 9-7 advantage in total shots but failed to put any on target.
Philadelphia goalkeeper Andrew Rick made two saves.
Club America goalkeeper Angel Malagon was injured late in the first half and was replaced by Rodolfo Cota, who did not register any saves.
LD Alajuelense 1, Los Angeles FC 1
Denis Bouanga scored in the second half to equalize as Los Angeles FC controlled the game against LD Alajuelense but settled for a draw in the first leg.
Alejandro Bran scored from long range just before halftime for Alajuelense, who will host the second leg on March 17 in Alajuela, Costa Rica. The winner will meet a Mexican team in the quarterfinals, either Cruz Azul or Monterrey.
LAFC dominated with a 31-4 advantage in shots and a 13-3 edge in shots on target.
In the 44th minute, Alajuelense crossed the ball into the box, which was cleared by the LAFC defense. The ball fell to Bran, who scored with a 20-yard volley into the left side of the net, past LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Twelve minutes later, Son Heung-Min assisted Bouanga, who scored with a powerful right-footed shot into the far corner of the goal.
