Breaks James Vaughan’s record (16y, 270d) set in 2005 for Everton
On Saturday, Arsenal’s Max Dowman made history by scoring a stoppage-time goal during a 2-0 victory over Everton. At 16 years and 73 days old, he became the youngest goalscorer in English Premier League history.
Dowman broke the previous record held by James Vaughan, who was 16 years and 270 days old when he scored for Everton in 2005. Dowman achieved this milestone in just his third league match, having previously come off the bench twice this season.
Stunning Solo Goal Seals Arsenal Win
Arsenal was leading thanks to an 89th-minute goal from Viktor Gyokeres. In stoppage time, Everton’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford came forward for a corner, leaving the net open.
Dowman collected the ball in his own half, dribbled past two defenders, and sprinted from the halfway line to tap the ball into the vacant net.
Arteta Praises Dowman
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised Dowman for his confidence and poise on the field.
“He just plays so naturally,” Arteta said. “He makes decisions to create opportunities, and what he delivered was remarkable.”
Arteta explained that he simply told Dowman: “Go and do your thing and win us the game.”
This season, Dowman also became the youngest player in UEFA Champions League history at 15 years and 308 days, making his debut as a second-half substitute against Slavia Prague.
Still a student, Dowman was invited to train with Arsenal’s senior team when he was 14 and impressed during a pre-season tour in Asia against teams like AC Milan and Newcastle United.
Due to Premier League rules for players under 18, Dowman must change into his match and training gear in a separate locker room from the senior players.
