Tottenham Secures Vital 2-1 Victory Against Aston Villa
Tottenham Hotspur moved out of the relegation zone by defeating Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park on Sunday. This marks Tottenham’s second consecutive Premier League win after struggling to secure a victory in 2026 prior to their recent triumph over Wolves.
Coach Roberto De Zerbi has led the team to two wins, one draw, and one loss since taking over from Igor Tudor during the March international break. Spurs dominated the match from the beginning, capitalizing on a heavily rotated Aston Villa side. Unai Emery’s team appeared sluggish and lackluster, leading to Spurs establishing a strong first-half lead with two goals from Conor Gallagher and Richarlison.
Emi Buendia scored a header in stoppage time, providing only a consolation for Aston Villa. As the final whistle blew, the away section at Villa Park erupted in celebration, indicating a potential turnaround in fortunes for the North London side.
De Zerbi Lauds Team Performance Following Vital Win
This victory marks the first time Tottenham has won consecutive league matches since their initial games against Burnley and Manchester City. While the team’s struggles at the bottom of the table are apparent, De Zerbi’s arrival has brought noticeable changes in both mentality and approach.
The Italian manager expressed satisfaction with his players’ performance both offensively and defensively, commending their mentality against a formidable Villa team.
“We played against Aston Villa, they are a very good team. A lot of very good players, a great manager, but we played very well for 60 minutes without the ball and with the ball,” De Zerbi remarked in an interview with TNT Sports (h/t BBC Sport).
“We suffered with Watkins and Buendia and conceded a goal. That was the only bad thing we did on the pitch. I’m pleased with this performance from my players. I know how much they have suffered this season.
“The high pressure is mentality and then in possession. We played very well when we had to attack the space or to shoot. I love playing football. My job is to help them and show what they are capable of.”
Focus Remains on Upcoming Challenges
The win against Villa allowed Tottenham to climb out of the relegation zone at the expense of West Ham, as the team has gathered seven points from their last three matches despite facing injuries to key players.
While the fans have reason to celebrate, De Zerbi acknowledges that much work remains to ensure the club’s survival in the Premier League. The 46-year-old emphasized the need for his team to concentrate on their goals and not become complacent after this victory. With three challenging matches ahead, the squad must maintain unity and determination to secure further wins.
