Tottenham’s Roberto De Zerbi Plans to Strengthen Defense with New Left-Backs
Tottenham Hotspur has made strides in preparation for the upcoming summer transfer window, having already secured new commitments contingent on the team remaining in the Premier League.
Spurs have finalized terms to sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool this summer. The seasoned left-back is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. Additionally, Tottenham has reached an agreement in principle to acquire Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth, whose contract at the Vitality Stadium also expires soon.
The team’s defensive vulnerabilities have been a consistent topic this season. This prompted the Lilywhites to pursue both Senesi and Robertson. In the context of the left-back position, Destiny Udogie has experienced a wavering presence in the starting lineup due to recurring injuries. He was unable to play in the recent victory against Wolves due to a minor issue, leaving Djed Spence to fill in.
Spurs brought in Souza from Santos during the winter transfer window. However, should Robertson join the team this summer, Souza may likely be loaned out. It appears that De Zerbi is also in search of an additional left-back alongside Robertson.
De Zerbi Seeks Reunion with Former Brighton Player
According to a report from Milan Live, De Zerbi aims to bring in Pervis Estupinan, currently with AC Milan, to Tottenham.
Estupinan transitioned to AC Milan from Brighton last summer, but the move has not benefited either side significantly. The Ecuadorian has found himself as a backup to young talent Davide Bartesaghi in recent matches, having started just 12 of 17 Serie A games this season.
The report suggests that the 28-year-old is likely to leave AC Milan after just one season, and De Zerbi is eager for a reunion. The Italian manager previously worked closely with Estupinan at Brighton, aiding in his development and tactical understanding. Under De Zerbi’s guidance, Estupinan became a standout player, which ultimately led to his significant move to Milan in 2025.
Currently, Tottenham does not face immediate competition for Estupinan’s services. However, if it becomes apparent that he is willing to depart Milan, other clubs are expected to show interest. De Zerbi needs to persuade the former Brighton player to make the move to Spurs if he seeks new opportunities. He may find the prospect of returning to the Premier League under a manager who previously maximized his potential appealing.
For Tottenham to successfully secure Estupinan from San Siro, maintaining their Premier League status is critical. If the transfer materializes, a departure for Udogie may not be out of the question, despite De Zerbi’s admiration for the player.
