Jose Mourinho Emerges as Top Candidate for Real Madrid Return

The managerial merry-go-round across Europe is already beginning to spin.

At Old Trafford, the memory of past managers still lingers, especially those who delivered silverware during transitional years following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

United’s hierarchy continues to weigh long-term stability under their current structure, but developments elsewhere in Europe could once again bring a familiar name back into the spotlight.

One of those names is Jose Mourinho, who is now emerging as a leading candidate for a sensational return to Real Madrid.

According to The Athletic, club president Florentino Perez is personally driving the push to appoint Jose Mourinho, with current boss Alvaro Arbeloa expected to be dismissed at the end of the season after a disappointing campaign.

Madrid are on course to finish another year without a major trophy, having fallen short in La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, and the Copa del Rey, prompting Perez to consider a proven winner to rebuild the project.

Mourinho’s previous spell in the Spanish capital between 2010 and 2013 delivered three trophies, including a record-breaking league title, although the Champions League eluded him during that time despite his success in the competition with Porto and Inter Milan.

The Portuguese coach, currently managing Benfica, is under contract until 2027 but has a release clause believed to be around £2.6 million, allowing for a potential early exit.

His agent, Jorge Mendes, has reportedly already offered him to Madrid, while speculation has also linked Mourinho with the Portugal national team job ahead of the next international cycle.

Interestingly, Kylian Mbappe has added fuel to the rumours after liking a social media post hinting at Mourinho’s return, a move that has not gone unnoticed among Madrid supporters.

Mourinho’s time at Manchester United remains a significant chapter in his career, having managed the club from 2016 to 2018 and delivered both the EFL Cup and the UEFA Europa League in his first season.

He also guided United to a second-place finish in the Premier League the following campaign, which he later described as one of his greatest achievements given the squad limitations at the time.

However, his tenure ended on a sour note following a breakdown in relationships with key players, and a dip in results.

Now, with Madrid searching for direction and Jose Mourinho once again available, the possibility of a reunion is gaining serious traction, setting the stage for one of the most intriguing managerial moves in European football.
