Coventry City Targets Tottenham’s James Maddison for Summer Move

Newly-promoted Premier League club Coventry City has set its sights on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison as a potential summer signing.

Tottenham is poised for significant changes at the end of the current season, irrespective of their final league standing. Currently, they find themselves two points away from safety, with only four games left in the season. Following a 1-0 victory against Wolves this past weekend, Spurs secured their first three points of 2026 and celebrated their first win under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi. Amidst this uncertain situation, several clubs are actively monitoring the team and eyeing their players.

Clubs like Aston Villa and Chelsea have expressed interest in signing Lucas Bergvall, while Archie Gray is attracting attention from top European teams. In this context, Coventry City has reportedly turned its attention to midfielder Conor Gallagher, who has struggled to make an impact at Tottenham after transferring from Atletico Madrid in the winter window.

Coventry City Eyes James Maddison’s Return

According to transfer expert Mick Brown, Coventry City is planning a move to reacquire James Maddison, should he be available for transfer from Tottenham this summer.

James Maddison has been sidelined for over eight months due to a ruptured ACL suffered during a friendly against Newcastle United in August 2025. He has been diligently working on his rehabilitation to regain fitness and support his struggling Spurs team. Despite being unfit, De Zerbi has included him on the bench for recent matches against Brighton and Wolves.

The timeline for Maddison’s return remains unclear, yet Coventry City is actively preparing for a potential summer acquisition of their former playmaker.

“James Maddison to Coventry City has got legs,” Mick Brown stated exclusively to Football Insider.

“He’s made no secret about the fact he’s a fan of the club, he came through the ranks there, so it’s a deal that could pull at his heartstrings,” he added.

“First things first, he has to get his fitness back, and that will be his priority. Once he does that, then a decision can be made about his future. If Tottenham go down, he might not be interested in playing in the Championship,” he continued.

“Coventry could take that opportunity to bring him back to the Premier League; I think they’re more likely to take that gamble than anybody else would be,” he suggested.

“It’s going to be a concern for a few clubs; he has to prove his fitness and that he can stay playing at the top level, because it can take a while to recover. But Coventry would be able to give him the time and be patient with him, and it’s an environment where he would feel comfortable,” he noted.

“So, like I say, he will have to prove he can get over the knee problem, but if he can be ready for pre-season, a move to Coventry would make a lot of sense,” Brown concluded.

Maddison’s Importance in Spurs’ Relegation Battle

De Zerbi holds Maddison in high regard, and his recent inclusion in the squad was a symbolic gesture from the Tottenham boss, indicating a potential revival for the team. Spurs managed to secure four points from their recent matches against Brighton and Wolves, even without Maddison on the field.

This highlights the value of Maddison’s leadership qualities off the pitch. With Xavi Simons now sidelined due to a long-term ACL injury sustained in the match against Wolves, Maddison is keen to make an impact as soon as he receives clearance to play again.

Given the remaining four matches, a fit and motivated Maddison could prove to be a pivotal factor in Tottenham’s fight for survival in the league.
