Manchester United Set to Promote Young Midfielder from Academy
Manchester United plans to bolster its midfield department this season by promoting an academy product, as three promising youngsters vie for a chance in the first team.
Head coach Michael Carrick currently has limited midfield options, relying on Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro, and Manuel Ugarte as his primary midfielders. Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount are available for attacking roles, but with Casemiro leaving at the end of the season and Ugarte rumored to be on the market, the team could require significant reinforcements this summer.
Three Young Man United Midfielders Competing for a First-Team Spot
In a recent Q&A session, Manchester Evening News writer Tyrone Marshall discussed potential plans for Manchester United’s midfield. He suggested that while signing two new midfielders seems likely, promoting an academy player may be the most feasible option.
Numerous names are linked to the club, including Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Aurelien Tchouameni, Carlos Baleba, and Ederson. However, Marshall believes the academy candidates are limited to three: Jim Thwaites, Tyler Fletcher, and Jack Moorhouse.
Interestingly, Jack Fletcher, the other twin, has not been mentioned despite being the first among them to debut for the senior team. Jack made three consecutive Premier League appearances this season against Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Wolves but has since faded from the squad following recent coaching changes.
Why Tyler Fletcher Could Be the Favorite for Man Utd Promotion
While his brother Jack has remained at the U21 level since Carrick’s appointment, Tyler Fletcher made his senior debut in February against Tottenham Hotspur. Although he has not played for the first team since, his frequent presence on the bench indicates he is a strong candidate for promotion.
Therefore, Carrick’s continued role as manager could open the door for Tyler Fletcher to step up to the first team this summer. Meanwhile, Moorhouse, at 20 years old, brings more experience, having made 20 appearances for Leyton Orient in League One this season. He excels at advancing the ball, while Tyler Fletcher tends to play deeper. The decision may ultimately depend on the skill set required based on potential new signings.
| Midfielder | Age | Current Team | Man Utd First-Team Appearances |
| Tyler Fletcher | 19 | Man Utd U21 | 1 |
| Jack Fletcher | 19 | Man Utd U21 | 3 |
| Jack Moorhouse | 20 | Leyton Orient (loan) | 0 |
| Jim Thwaites | 18 | Man Utd U18 | 0 |
Thwaites, at just 18 years old, shows considerable promise and has drawn comparisons to stars like Pedri, Toni Kroos, and Thiago Alcantara due to his exceptional composure and ability to navigate tight spaces.
