Manchester United to Promote Young Talent in Midfield This Season

Manchester United will reportedly include an academy product in their midfield department this season, with three young players emerging as potential candidates.

Michael Carrick has faced challenges with limited midfield options, relying on just three core midfielders: Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro, and Manuel Ugarte. Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount serve as options for the attacking midfield role.

With Casemiro set to leave at the end of the season and Ugarte up for sale, Manchester United may need to make three new additions in the summer.

Three Young Midfielders Competing for First-Team Spot

In a recent Q & A, Manchester Evening News writer Tyrone Marshall discussed Manchester United’s midfield plans.

While the journalist did not dismiss the possibility of signing three new midfielders in the summer, he suggested that acquiring two players and promoting an academy talent might be the most realistic approach.

With numerous names circulating in the market, predicting which midfielders Manchester United will sign next season remains challenging. Prospects include Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Aurelien Tchouameni, Carlos Baleba, and Ederson.

When it comes to promotions from within, Marshall believes the focus can narrow down to three candidates: Jim Thwaites, Tyler Fletcher, and Jack Moorhouse.

The other Fletcher, Jack, however, has not been mentioned, despite being the first to debut among them.

Jack Fletcher made three consecutive Premier League appearances this season against Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Wolves, all in December.

However, the 19-year-old gradually fell out of favor following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal and his father Darren Fletcher’s brief stint as manager.

Tyler Fletcher: Leading Candidate for Promotion

While Jack Fletcher has been playing solely for the Manchester United U21 team since Carrick’s arrival, Tyler Fletcher made his debut in February against Spurs.

Though he hasn’t played with the senior team since then, his frequent presence in the dugout suggests he is the manager’s preferred choice for a permanent promotion.

Thus, Carrick’s confirmation as Manchester United boss could open the door for Tyler Fletcher’s first-team promotion this summer.

On the other hand, Moorhouse, who is slightly older at 20 and has more experience, is currently on loan at Leyton Orient, where he has made 20 appearances in League One.

The Manchester native excels at advancing the ball, while Tyler Fletcher tends to play from a deeper position. Consequently, the final decision could hinge on which skill set is deemed more beneficial for the squad, particularly in light of potential new signings.

Midfielder Age Current Team Man Utd First-Team Appearances
Tyler Fletcher 19 Man Utd U21 1
Jack Fletcher 19 Man Utd U21 3
Jack Moorhouse 20 Leyton Orient (loan) 0
Jim Thwaites 18 Man Utd U18 0

In conclusion, Thwaites could be viewed as the most talented player of the group. The 18-year-old has drawn comparisons to renowned players like Pedri, Toni Kroos, and Thiago Alcantara due to his composure on the ball and ability to maneuver in tight spaces.

Thwaites also showcased his skills during last month’s training camp in Dublin. However, as he has spent most of the season with the Man Utd U18 team, promoting him directly to the first team without prior experience in the U21 ranks or a loan spell could present a risk.
