Tottenham Looks to Strengthen Left-Wing Position Amid West Ham Struggles
Tottenham Hotspur surprised fans last summer by signing Mohammed Kudus from rival West Ham. The appeal of Champions League football persuaded the Ghanaian international to make the move.
Kudus emerged as Spurs’ most effective player during the first half of the season, but a quad injury suffered in January against Sunderland severely impacted the team’s performance. Following this setback, Tottenham sought to replace Kudus by targeting West Ham once again.
During the January transfer window, Tottenham considered West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville after his impressive display against them in a 2-1 defeat. However, West Ham was reluctant to part with a key player in the middle of the season, and he remained with the club.
Relegation Could Prompt Spurs to Pursue Summerville
Summerville has been West Ham’s standout performer during a challenging season. Following a narrow 1-0 loss to Arsenal, the team finds itself in 18th place, fighting to avoid relegation as they prepare for a crucial match against Tottenham.
The 24-year-old’s strong performances have attracted interest from various European clubs. Tottenham continues to admire his skill and may make a move if the transfer window opens next month. Should West Ham be relegated, Spurs could take the opportunity to pursue Summerville.
“Yeah, I think there’d be more than just Tottenham who would be looking at Crysencio Summerville,” remarked Pete O’Rourke on the Inside Track podcast (h/t Football Insider).
“West Ham don’t want to lose Summerville; if they go down, it’ll be a real uphill task to keep hold of him.”
“Tottenham have had a long-term interest in the Dutchman, and I’m sure if they can stay up at the expense of West Ham, they’ll be hoping that they could maybe lure him away. There’ll be a lot of Premier League clubs who will be looking at the tricky winger hoping that he could be snapped up and capitalise on West Ham’s potential relegation.”
“For West Ham though, the vultures will come calling for their top players if they do suffer relegation, and Summerville will be one of those players who will be in huge demand.”
Spurs Eye Summerville to Enhance Squad Depth
Tottenham has faced challenges this season due to a lack of creativity and goals from their wingers. The departure of Son Heung-min last August has left a gap in the squad’s left flank, affecting their overall performance.
In light of these issues, the club is keen to strengthen this area, with Summerville presenting a promising option. His pace, flair, and versatility—standing out as both an attacking midfielder and a wide forward—make him an attractive target for manager Roberto De Zerbi.
If West Ham is relegated, Summerville would likely strive to remain in the Premier League and could view a move to Tottenham as an exciting opportunity for his career. After securing Kudus, Spurs could potentially deal another blow to West Ham by signing Summerville next summer.
