Matthijs de Ligt Undergoes Surgery for Long-Standing Back Injury
Injuries continue to impact Manchester United’s season, with key players sidelined during a crucial transitional phase under Michael Carrick. The latest focus is on Matthijs de Ligt, who has been struggling with a persistent back issue that has kept him off the pitch for months.
Manchester United confirmed through their website that de Ligt has successfully undergone surgery to address this long-standing back injury.
The Netherlands international has not played since November and has yet to make an appearance under Carrick, despite a brief return to training last month.
Initially hopeful of a return before the current season concludes, the decision for surgery was reached collaboratively with the club, as they agreed it was the most effective long-term solution. United describes the operation as part of a carefully managed rehabilitation process aimed at ensuring full recovery.
Reflecting on his prolonged absence from the game, the 26-year-old shared his thoughts on social media. He said, “After 6 months of treatment and working hard to get back, surgery was the only option left. I’m disappointed I couldn’t help the team these last 6 months and obviously missing out on the World Cup, but I am looking forward to doing everything to get back in front of the fans and feeling better again.”
Following the surgery, United issued an update on de Ligt’s condition, stating, “Matthijs de Ligt has undergone successful surgery to address a back injury. Having diligently worked throughout his rehabilitation process, the decision was made that a corrective procedure was the best course of action.”
The club plans to implement a structured recovery program over the next several months, focusing on rehabilitation instead of an immediate return to play. De Ligt expressed his commitment to recovery and gratitude towards those who supported him during this challenging time, saying, “Since November, I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love—playing football. I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career. I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible.”
De Ligt made 14 appearances earlier in the campaign before being sidelined in November and has missed 24 matches since. His absence has meant he has yet to play under Carrick, as United aims to ensure he is fully fit ahead of the next season rather than rushing his recovery.
