Manchester United Faces Goalkeeping Dilemma as Onana’s Future Uncertain
Manchester United must decide on their goalkeeping strategy this summer, following Senne Lammens’ successful season as the starting goalkeeper in 2025/26.
The team loaned out Andre Onana, a £47.2 million signing, to Trabzonspor last summer due to significant errors in his first seasons with the club, as they searched for a new first-choice keeper.
Onana’s loan to Trabzonspor has been fruitful, and Manchester United is expected to engage in transfer activities in the coming weeks and months.
According to The Daily Mail, Trabzonspor wants to keep Onana, as Manchester United has expressed that they do not want him back at Old Trafford.
Trabzonspor President Ertugrul Dogan praised Onana after he saved three penalties in the Turkish Cup quarter-finals against Samsunspor, stating, “We love him. If the conditions are right, we want him to stay.”
His £120,000-a-week salary and vibrant personality make it challenging for Manchester United to consider him as a backup keeper, which indicates that a summer move, whether permanent or another loan, is likely.
The most probable scenario for Onana is to continue his loan with Trabzonspor, although other clubs may express interest. Manchester United will aim to recover as much of the nearly £50 million they invested in him in 2023 as possible, though that goal may prove difficult.
Onana’s reputation has diminished since he joined Manchester United from Inter Milan in 2023. Once considered among the world’s top goalkeepers, he was viewed as a great addition for Erik ten Hag’s squad.
However, his situation has deteriorated, and he faces an uncertain future as he struggles to regain his form. With Lammens thriving, he appears to have no way back to his parent club. Trabzonspor’s desire for Onana’s services remains, but any agreement will depend on negotiations with Manchester United, who are likely eager to finalize a disappointing chapter for both parties.
