Manchester United Appoints Michael Carrick as Permanent Manager Following Impressive Stint

It’s taken the span of fifteen games for Manchester United to decide upon their next permanent head coach, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim in January.

As the club looked for its caretaker appointment to see out the season and secure Champions League football in the first month of 2026, it came between club legends Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

After careful deliberation, the board eventually decided on Michael Carrick, as Solskjaer wanted an assured future down the line at the club. But this decision has ended up irrelevant for Carrick, who has earned himself a permanent job after an excellent stint in charge.

Since his initially temporary appointment, Carrick has won 10 of 15 games in charge at Manchester United, losing just twice. The excellent job has meant UEFA Champions League qualification, and in a simpler fashion than Red Devils fans could have ever imagined – earning their spot with three Premier League games to spare.

Now the focus has turned to making Michael Carrick’s stay at the club one for the future – and an official announcement about his appointment is impending.

Manchester United hope to announce Michael Carrick’s appointment as manager before they face Nottingham Forest in their final Premier League home game at Old Trafford on Sunday lunchtime, according to The Telegraph.

The club’s final home match of the season is set to be an occasion of celebration, as Michael Carrick’s permanent appointment is penned in, and farewells to the outgoing Casemiro are said.

Carrick has been offered a contract running until 2028, with an option for a further season if the club wishes to trigger it. It may not be the most exciting and long-term of initial deals, but it is one that allows Manchester United to make a less financially-ruining change if necessary, which certainly won’t be in their current thinking.

Their game against Nottingham Forest is one where Manchester United will set out to win once again, but there will be a feel of celebration in the air at Old Trafford – focus can now start on preparing for the Champions League.
