Tottenham Eyes Reunion with Former Marseille Player Under Roberto De Zerbi

Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment in March has sparked a turnaround for Tottenham Hotspur, who are nearing the confirmation of their Premier League status for next season. As a result, the team is planning significant changes to address their underwhelming performance.

Several pressing issues need attention, particularly the lack of a dynamic box-to-box midfielder who can impact both ends of the game. With Yves Bissouma likely leaving when his contract expires this summer and concerns surrounding Joao Palhinha’s future, the Lilywhites must seek a midfielder capable of making a substantial impact next season.

Football finance expert Stefan Borson has suggested that if Spurs can avoid relegation from the Premier League, they will invest heavily in revamping their squad this summer. The Lewis family needs to show clear intent in the transfer market by supporting De Zerbi in the upcoming window.

Tottenham Targets Brighton Midfielder Matt O’Riley

Recent reports from Dortmund-brighton”>TEAMtalk indicate that Tottenham is a surprise contender for Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Matt O’Riley, who is favored by De Zerbi.

Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have also shown interest in the 25-year-old, who has struggled to make an impact at Brighton since his transfer from Celtic in 2024, primarily due to injuries. After recovering from a long-term injury, opportunities became scarce, leading him to go on loan to Marseille last summer.

During his time at Marseille when De Zerbi was head coach, O’Riley excelled, making 25 appearances in all competitions with a goal and six assists, before Brighton recalled him in February to aid their European ambitions. However, since returning, he has made only six Premier League appearances under Fabian Hurzeler.

The report mentions that Brighton is open to permanent offers for O’Riley if they receive a suitable bid, aiming to recoup funds for reinvestment in areas that need attention. They value the midfielder around £35 million, with Celtic holding a sell-on clause.

Should Spurs Pursue the Brighton Midfielder?

With O’Riley seeking a permanent move away from Brighton and Spurs in need of midfielders, he could enhance De Zerbi’s squad. The Tottenham manager previously had a positive working relationship with O’Riley at Marseille, which could be a factor in persuading him to join.

O’Riley offers a blend of hard work, skill, and strategic play in central midfield, providing both defensive support and attacking creativity. His calmness in front of goal could also position him as a long-term replacement for James Maddison, who recently returned from an ACL injury.

It remains to be seen whether the Tottenham management will make a strong move for the Brighton outcast.
