Hugo Broos, the head coach of Bafana Bafana, has firmly addressed calls for his resignation following a recent 1-1 draw against Czechia. Broos expressed his belief that he has significantly contributed to the South African national team’s progress over the past five years and that resigning is not a simple option for him.
Reflecting on the team’s evolution, Broos stated, “If you see five years ago, nobody knew Bafana Bafana, and look what we did in these five years and now the results are not what people expect.” He emphasized that expectations have risen but acknowledged that criticism often accompanies high expectations.
Broos defended his coaching decisions, saying, “They don’t think ‘are we able,’ they just expect things. And then you get the negative side of my job, the criticism, people wanting you to resign, and whatever.” He added that, with 40 years of experience in coaching, he is unfazed by the backlash.
“Okay — but I’m 40 years in this job, the criticism is just water off my body,” Broos remarked. “They can write and say what they want, I do what I think I need to do and today I think I did what I needed to do.”
