Manchester United Set to Sign Ederson as Atalanta Eyes Replacement

Following reports from Italy that Manchester United have found their first midfield signing of the summer, Atalanta is now searching for a replacement. This development comes after confirmation that United reached an agreement with the Italian club to sign 26-year-old midfielder Ederson, a player they have shown interest in since 2024, following their unsuccessful attempt to sign Manuel Ugarte.

Atalanta head coach Raffaele Palladino addressed the media on Friday after his team’s 1-1 draw with Fiorentina, stating, “Ederson didn’t play tonight because he is in advanced talks with a top foreign club.”

This top foreign club is likely Manchester United, who are increasingly expected to secure Ederson’s signature. With Casemiro departing and Manuel Ugarte likely to follow, securing midfield signings has become essential for the club.

The two clubs have reached a verbal agreement, and the player has already aligned on the contract details, according to transfer expert Matteo Moretto, corroborating other reports. This signing will significantly impact Manchester United’s £150m midfield budget for the summer and will enable Atalanta to begin their search for a replacement.

According to journalist Nicolo Schira on X, Atalanta is considering Lucas Da Cunha of Como and Gianluca Gaetano of Cagliari to replace Ederson. Both players are experienced midfielders in Italy and are of a similar age to Ederson. However, neither is expected to match the Brazilian’s output, which is why Manchester United has pursued him.

If the signing of Ederson is finalized, United will still have approximately £100m remaining to invest, providing them with various options. Whether they opt for top target Elliot Anderson, who carries a hefty price tag from Nottingham Forest, or pursue a lower-cost alternative, the club faces a significant decision ahead.

Ederson appears to be a strong signing who could adapt well to the Premier League, but further acquisitions of players with experience in England should also be a priority for Manchester United.
