An all German affair at the Champions League has been an all timer at the Champions League. Only Bayer Leverkusen have managed to replace Borussia Dortmund in the duel, but the all mighty Bayern Munich remains even present.
Vincent Kompany and Xabi Alonso have locked horns for the 4th time in this season, with 2 draws and 1 win for Alonso, Kompany had to win this highly anticipated match. Bayer Leverkusen have managed to maintain their levels after the breakout season last year and have also managed to retain all their superstars.
Bayer Leverkusen finished 6th in The Champions League group stage and have looked dangerous through the campaign whereas Bayern Munich either won emphatically or lost the most bizarre games. The season has been a weird one under Vincent Kompany as The Bavarians have obliterated minnow teams but have been lacking against quality sides.
Harry Kane scores Brace as Mukiele sees Red Card
Bayern Munich took a commanding step toward the Champions League quarter-finals as a Harry Kane brace secured a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, who played the final half-hour with 10 men.

Within nine minutes, Kane gave Bayern advantage with a glancing header from a beautiful cross from Michael Olise. Then, Jamal Musiala took advantage of a goalkeeping blunder. Leverkusen’s hopes were further dashed when Kane scored his 31st goal of the season from the penalty spot after Nordi Mukiele was sent off for a careless challenge.
Leverkusen, who had so far this season avoided losing to Bayern, had a forgettable night. The squad lost a focal point in attack as a result of Xabi Alonso’s costly decision to bench Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick. Their suffering got worse when Kovar committed a silly mistake on the goal line and Mukiele’s irrational decision to go on a tackle with studs up on Kingsley Coman.
Alonso admitted, “A lot went against us today, but that was our own fault. We didn’t have good control and made big mistakes.”
To survive in the competition, Leverkusen will need to pull off a spectacular comeback in the second leg at BayArena on March 11.
