Jurgen Klopp Surprises Fans by Choosing Knicks Over Manchester United
Jurgen Klopp, recognized as one of the top soccer managers in the modern era due to his successful stints with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, recently made headlines with an unexpected choice. After transforming Dortmund into Bundesliga champions and guiding Liverpool to European and English glory, Klopp remained away from management since leaving the Reds in 2024. He has now taken to discussing sports parallels between soccer and American teams.
In a recent Instagram video shared by GOAL USA, Klopp was prompted to choose between the New York Knicks and Manchester United. His decision was unexpected; Klopp opted for the Knicks, despite United boasting a more impressive trophy cabinet and a stronger global soccer presence.
This surprising choice may stem from Klopp’s history with Liverpool, where he fiercely competed against United, highlighting one of English soccer’s most intense rivalries.
Despite the rationale, Klopp’s choice raised eyebrows. Manchester United stands as 20-time English champions and three-time European champions, whereas the Knicks have secured only two NBA titles in their history. While the Knicks hold significant cultural influence, Klopp’s preference appeared to carry more sentimental weight than statistical reasoning.
In the same video, when faced with choosing between basketball legend Michael Jordan and soccer icon Lionel Messi, Klopp humorously dodged the question, playfully merging their names by stating, “Michael Messi. Lionel Jordan.” However, when asked to compare his Champions League-winning Liverpool side with the Chicago Bulls’ second three-peat, Klopp confidently selected Liverpool without any hesitation.
