Everton is falling behind in the pursuit of John Stones as several prominent European clubs show interest ahead of the summer transfer window. David Ornstein confirmed on April 22, 2026, that Stones’ departure from Manchester City is a mutual decision, with an official announcement anticipated soon. Major teams across Europe are already expressing their interest. Stones has only made 14 appearances this season, as Pep Guardiola has primarily relied on Rubén Dias, Marc Guéhi, and Abdukodir Khusanov.

Everton Struggles in the Bid for John Stones This Summer

Stones transferred to City from Everton in August 2016 for £47.5 million and has since won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, two EFL Cups, and the Champions League. Now, after a decade of successful play, the 31-year-old faces a significant career decision.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke mentioned on the Transfer Insider podcast that Stones is not in a hurry and is open to opportunities abroad. Juventus and clubs in the Saudi Pro League are showing interest, along with Brighton, West Ham, and Everton. However, reports indicate that Everton cannot match his current wages, which Capology estimates at £250,000 per week at City.

“It’s more a case of waiting and seeing right now. Stones won’t rush into any decision. He’ll consider his next steps in the coming weeks once it has been confirmed that he will leave Manchester City after a successful 10 years at the club. There’s been links with a potential move back to Everton, but I would say they’re probably unlikely right now. Stones, at this stage of his career, 31, I think he could maybe look to try his luck abroad.”
