Toronto FC Faces Crisis After Loss to CPL Team
Although the city was in nirvana this week, BMO Field, the home to Toronto FC, has been in crisis mode. On Tuesday night, the unimaginable happened. TFC became the first MLS side to lose to a Canadian Premier League team, spinning and sputtering out of the Telus Canadian Championship in a 3-1 defeat to Atlético Ottawa. The aftermath was, for lack of better terms, raw.
Head Coach Robin Fraser used words like “embarrassed” and “tragic” to describe defensive lapses. Captain Jonathan Osorio went on the PR side and apologized to the fan base, one that’s become weary of inconsistent results.
The Goat Approaches
The timing for a “learning moment” couldn’t be more unfortunate. Tomorrow afternoon, Inter Miami, including the red-hot Lionel Messi, march into BMO Field. Miami arrives as the heavy favourites, sitting at the top of the table and straight after a performance where Messi contributed to all three of their goals.
For a TFC backline that looked “inexperienced and makeshift” (noted by Fraser) against Ottawa, the prospect of facing the greatest player in history is nothing short of terrifying.
A Statement or a Slide?
TFC is doomed with injury, with ten players currently sidelined. The deck is all but stacked against Toronto. However, despite the tall task and the unfortunate lack of momentum leading into the game, Saturday presents a rare opportunity for redemption. There is no better way to wash away the shame of a cup upset than by holding your own against the GOAT’s team. After all, you can’t have darkness if there was no light to begin with.
The question for TFC is simple: will you let the loss to Ottawa define you, or will it spark a resurgence? If they can’t find their defensive identity by kick-off, “embarrassment” might be the beginning of a very long summer at BMO Field.
