Jess Fishlock Injured During Final NWSL Season Match
Days after announcing that she would retire at the end of this National Women’s Soccer League season, midfielder Jess Fishlock was stretchered off the field following an injury in the Seattle Reign’s home game against the Utah Royals.
In the 65th minute of the match, Fishlock was struck in the leg by a shot on goal from her teammate and fell to the ground in pain. Medical staff applied an air cast to her left leg before transporting her off the field on a stretcher.
A cornerstone of the Reign, Fishlock is the only current player who has been with the league since its inception in 2013, playing every season without interruption. The 2021 NWSL MVP has achieved significant milestones, including three NWSL Shields (2014, 2015, 2022), three NWSL Championship appearances (2014, 2015, 2023), and seven Best XI selections, which rank as the second-most in league history.
The club will honor Fishlock’s career during its second annual Queen’s Match scheduled for Friday, October 2.
Fishlock was not the only player hurt during the match, as Utah was also forced to substitute its goalkeeper in the 82nd minute, with Mandy McGlynn taking the place of Mia Justus.
