Sophia Wilson Nets Game-Winning Goal as Portland Beats Angel City FC
Sophia Wilson has scored her first goal since her return from maternity leave.
The striker netted the decisive goal in Portland’s 2-1 victory over Angel City FC. Wilson’s goal came in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time. After giving birth to her daughter Gianna “Gigi” Wilson in September 2025, Wilson faced Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson one-on-one, skillfully placing the ball into the opposite low corner.
The forward recently rejoined the U.S. women’s national team earlier this month. In the National Women’s Soccer League, Wilson has made three starts across six matches, accumulating 337 minutes on the pitch.
During the match against Angel City, Portland, currently ranked second on the NWSL table with 13 points, initially took the lead in the 76th minute with a goal from Pietra Tordin. Wilson extended the lead in the 95th minute, but Angel City responded quickly, scoring in the 98th minute with a goal from Zambian international Prisca Chilufya.
Wilson’s timely goal, scored just two minutes later, secured the win for the Thorns, earning them three crucial points. Portland will return to Providence Park on Wednesday to face San Diego in a contest for the top position on the league table.
Meanwhile, Angel City FC will remain at home and host the Utah Royals on Saturday.
