The upcoming Rome derby between Roma and Lazio is steeped in controversy, as the scheduling of the match may lead to significant repercussions. Serie A has arranged for the highly anticipated clash to take place at noon on Sunday, with the intention of ensuring that the final rounds of all matches are played simultaneously.
The decision has been further complicated by intervention from the Rome prefecture and the public order committee, who insisted on the early kick-off to avoid a schedule clash with the final of the Rome Masters tennis tournament. This has drawn sharp criticism from Lazio’s head coach, Maurizio Sarri, who responded with vehement threats regarding his team’s participation.
“If the match is set for Monday evening, I’ll be there. But if they decide to play at noon on Sunday, I won’t be at the stadium. In fact, if I were club president, I wouldn’t put the team on the field at all,” declared the fiery Biancocelesti manager.
Sarri has emphasized that playing at noon in late May in Italy poses severe physical challenges for top clubs due to the heat. He further criticized the decision, stating that it jeopardizes player safety and diminishes the quality of the game.
“This isn’t football. We have four or five clubs playing in the Champions League worth 70–80 million euros, and you make them play in the midday heat? That’s madness,” the coach added, referring to the potential risks involved.
The leadership of Serie A now faces a crucial decision: either acquiesce to Sarri’s demands and alter the broadcast schedule, or risk undermining one of the most significant derbies in world football.
