Manchester United Targets Afonso Moreira as Left-Winger in Squad Rebuilding Efforts

Manchester United are continuing their hunt for a talented left-winger this summer as they enter their next phase of rebuilding their squad.

The aim is to build a team that can return The Red Devils to the top of world football, routinely battling for and winning the Premier League.

Being a huge feat, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe previously commented that the rebuild could take as long as six transfer windows, to have the depth and quality to consistently compete at the top.

Last summer saw an overhaul of their attack, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha bringing vital Premier League experience, while Benjamin Sesko joined as the new frontman.

In goal, Senne Lammens was signed, instantly providing confidence to his defence, looking to be a stable and reliable hand in between the posts.

Now, this summer is set for a major overhaul of the midfield, with £150 million set aside for three new signings, including replacements for Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte.

However, United are also looking at a new left-winger to work alongside Matheus Cunha, providing a rotation option, with Lyon star Afonso Moreira now entering the mix.

Portuguese outlet A Bola have reported the news, saying The Red Devils have made contact with Lyon to understand his availability this summer.

During his debut season, having moved from Sporting CP last summer for £1.73 million, the 21-year-old has already established himself as the French side’s first-choice left-winger.

In 35 appearances, having missed seven games from a hamstring injury, Moreira has scored eight goals and grabbed 11 assists, helping the side hold third place in Ligue 1.

Recently, the winger put in a match-winning display against PSG, setting up Endrick to open the scoring before scoring himself in their 2-1 win.

It’s understood that Lyon are looking for at least €25 million for Afonso Moreira, with 20% of the sale due to go to Sporting CP due to the sell-on clause they retained in the sale last summer.
