Manchester United may have a legitimate opportunity to acquire AC Milan star Rafael Leao, who is losing favor among fans at San Siro.

The Portuguese forward, a product of Sporting CP’s youth system, previously played for LOSC Lille before joining the Rossoneri in 2019.

Leao has gradually established himself as a key player for Milan, especially after playing a significant role in their triumph for the Scudetto title in the 2021/22 season, which earned him the Serie A MVP Award.

Leao has garnered a reputation as one of the world’s top attackers, celebrated for his ‘magical’ skills.

However, the Portuguese international is currently experiencing a difficult campaign, facing significant criticism from Milan supporters during his last three home matches against Udinese, Juventus, and Atalanta.

Leao’s Stats at Milan Appearances Goals Assists

As a result, many believe that the 26-year-old’s time at San Siro may be drawing to a close. With his contract running until June 2028, AC Milan could capitalize on this moment to secure a profitable transfer.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, the Rossoneri are setting an asking price between €50 million (£43m) and €60 million (£52m).

The Italian paper also notes that Al-Hilal is looking to reunite Leao with his former teammate, Theo Hernandez, although the forward is not interested in moving to the Saudi Pro League. Instead, he harbors a ‘dream’ of playing in the Premier League.

The report confirms that both Chelsea and Manchester United are closely monitoring Leao’s situation.

Leao Remains a Valuable Asset Despite Challenges at Milan

Leao’s ambition to play in England should be encouraging for Manchester United, who may seek a new forward capable of filling various roles, particularly on the left wing, especially if Joshua Zirkzee departs this summer.

Interestingly, a recent report suggested that United and Milan might explore a swap deal involving Leao and Zirkzee.

While Leao’s disappointing season raises some concerns, it is worth noting that coach Max Allegri has been using him as a centre-forward, a position that does not fully exploit his strengths.

Leao shines when attacking from the left wing, utilizing his speed and precise dribbling to challenge defenders effectively.

Furthermore, many consider his asking price a bargain for a player of his quality.
