Manchester United Focuses on Extending Bruno Fernandes’ Contract
Manchester United faces an important summer in the transfer market, with retaining star player and captain Bruno Fernandes seen as a critical move for the club’s ambitions.
The club is working to secure a new deal for the 31-year-old following an impressive season in which Fernandes excelled both individually and as a key member of the Manchester United squad.
After the signing of Kobbie Mainoo to a five-year deal in April, Fernandes is reportedly next on United’s priority list. Fortunately, the club captain shows enthusiasm for engaging in discussions about a contract extension.
“After turning down a mammoth financial offer to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal last summer, there had been expectations that Fernandes would leave if United did not qualify for the Champions League,” reports Simon Stone for BBC Sport.
“With Champions League qualification now achieved, Bruno Fernandes’s camp is eager to begin discussions regarding an extension. United is open to talks but remains committed to maintaining control over their wage structure,” Stone adds.
Manchester United is clearly keen on retaining Fernandes, but only under financially reasonable terms. This cautious approach aligns with the club’s new sporting ownership strategy, particularly following cost-cutting measures by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Having secured qualification for the Champions League presents United with leverage in forthcoming discussions. With Bruno eager to finalize an agreement, the responsibility now lies with the club to propose a suitable offer.
Fernandes is contracted with United until June 2027, although the club holds an option to extend that contract by an additional year.
Securing Fernandes for a few more years should be a top priority for Manchester United this summer. The club captain has had a significant impact this season and is currently competing to break the Premier League assist record for a single campaign.
This contract extension is essential for United; next season will be pivotal in determining the club’s direction, and Bruno Fernandes must be an integral part of that journey.
