Manchester United Returns to Champions League, Wolfsburg Faces Relegation

As the 2025/26 season concludes and summer approaches, football clubs evaluate their standings for the upcoming season, with mixed fortunes evident across the leagues.

Manchester United has secured a third-place finish in the Premier League, ensuring their return to the Champions League under Michael Carrick’s leadership.

In contrast, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley, and West Ham United face the disappointment of relegation to the Championship.

Furthermore, a former Red Devil is also experiencing relegation woes in Germany, as VFL Wolfsburg drops down to the 2. Bundesliga.

In the Bundesliga relegation play-off this evening, 16th-place Wolfsburg squared off against third-place Paderborn, competing for a position in the top flight for the next season. Ultimately, Paderborn emerged victorious, overcoming a ten-man Wolfsburg after extra time with a final score of 2-1.

This defeat marks the first time in 29 years that Wolfsburg will not compete in the Bundesliga, and heading down with them is former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen.

After leaving Old Trafford without a club at the end of last season due to the non-renewal of his contract, Eriksen trained with Malmo before officially signing with Wolfsburg.

Despite the team’s struggles, the 33-year-old has played a crucial role for Wolfsburg, making 34 appearances, scoring three goals, and providing ten assists, even stepping in as captain towards the season’s conclusion.

With his contract extending until 2027, the Denmark international aims to assist Wolfsburg in regaining their top-flight status next season.
