Oldham Athletic Announces Key Squad Changes After Season Finale

Oldham Athletic has confirmed several significant decisions regarding its squad following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season. A number of players will be leaving as part of their retained and released list.

The League Two side is actively reshaping its lineup after a positive campaign back in the EFL. Dermot Mee, a goalkeeper from Manchester United, is also set to be released this summer.

This decision reflects a broader trend of movement across English football as clubs prepare for the upcoming season. In related news, Oldham officially signed former Manchester United striker Michael Mellon last summer. He joined on loan from Burnley and has been playing under his father, Micky Mellon, highlighting the club’s connections to players with ties to Old Trafford.

Oldham Athletic’s official website lists multiple players who have now been released, including a midfielder with a history in Manchester United’s academy system. This decision follows a season in which he struggled to establish himself as a regular in the first team.

The player in question is Kieron Morris, who spent part of the campaign on loan at National League side FC Halifax Town. The 31-year-old made limited appearances for Oldham after his move from Tranmere Rovers in 2025, and he was subsequently loaned out in January for more consistent game time.

Beginning his career in lower leagues, Morris was previously noticed by Manchester United’s scouting network during his youth and even spent time on trial with the club before embarking on his professional journey elsewhere. Throughout his career, he built a solid reputation, most notably with Tranmere, where he made over 200 appearances.

His departure signifies the end of a brief tenure at Oldham, as the club decides to take a different approach ahead of next season. Manager Micky Mellon has expressed gratitude towards outgoing players, thanking them for their contributions during a campaign that saw the club’s continued progress after returning to the Football League. Morris will now explore his options as a free agent ahead of the summer transfer window, with his extensive experience in the EFL and non-league levels likely to generate interest as Oldham pushes forward with its squad rebuild.
