Abdeslam Ouaddou, head coach of Orlando Pirates, highlighted the intense competition within his squad, which influenced his decision to field Boitumelo Radiopane instead of Evidence Makgopa in their recent match. Makgopa’s absence from the match-day squad was a point of discussion following Pirates’ 3-1 victory over AmaZulu on Saturday.
The match, held at the Orlando Amstel Arena, propelled the Pirates to the top of the PSL standings. Radiopane replaced Yanela Mbuthuma just nine minutes after the hour mark, reflecting the team’s strategic choices. Ouaddou noted, “He was working for a long time, trying to come back. If you remember, just before going to the break, he played in the Black Label All-Star game. He scored and did a really good performance. He was giving his best in the training. We thought with the staff that it was the moment to give him some time. We manage the group like that.”
Discussing game time and competition, Ouaddou emphasized that it is vital for strikers to maintain their competitive edge. He elaborated, “In terms of game time, it’s important for a striker to be competitive. We thought that for Evidence Makgopa, the fact that he needed more time, maybe a full-time game, 90 minutes, in terms of competitiveness, was important.” He added that Radiopane’s inclusion also aimed to boost his confidence after a lengthy absence from the squad.
