Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg said referees have a responsibility to trust their own decisions again and not rely on VAR.

“The referees have a responsibility, starting this weekend, to make as many correct decisions on the pitch as possible and not rely on VAR,” Clattenberg was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
“What I found last season was that referees weren’t making split-second decisions like they used to and they were relying on VAR.”

“VAR then said there was no intervention line they wanted because there was no clear error from the referee,” he added.
“We want the referee to come back and make a decision.”
This season the Premier League will place more emphasis on refereeing decisions and wants VAR to only intervene on subjective decisions, if there is a clear error in the referee’s decision.
