Colorado Rapids Aim for Victory Against Struggling St. Louis City

As the Colorado Rapids sit in the middle of the MLS standings, the team recognizes that winning tight matches is crucial. After a 1-0 defeat to Houston on May 2, Colorado will look to secure a three-point result this Saturday night when they host the struggling St. Louis City in Commerce City, Colorado.

Rapids coach Matt Wells emphasizes the need for his team to find their rhythm earlier in games. “We need to be able to put some points on the board where we don’t quite hit our stride,” he explained. “At the moment, if we don’t quite hit our stride and our rhythm, we’re always on the losing end of these tight games with small margins.”

The Rapids currently hold a record of 4-6-1, totaling 13 points, despite outscoring their opponents 22-19. While they rank third in the league for goals scored, they also sit at 19th for goals conceded. Rafael Navarro leads the team with seven goals, followed by Darren Yapi and Paxten Aaronson with three goals each. Recently, Yapi signed a contract extension that will keep him with the club through the 2028-29 season, with an option for the 2029-30 season.

On the other hand, St. Louis City, with a record of 1-6-3 and only 6 points, has faced ongoing challenges after a promising expansion year in 2023. The team is coming off a 2-0 defeat in Austin, marking their record at 0-3-2 in the last five matches, during which they have been outscored 11-5. With only nine goals across ten matches, St. Louis has one of the lowest scoring records in the league, and their defense has also faltered, conceding 18 goals.

Despite the setbacks, players like Eduard Lowen express confidence in the system implemented by first-year coach Yoann Damet. “I’m more confident than ever before,” Lowen stated. “The results haven’t been there and we’re not where we want to be right now. If the results come, we’ll have a great future ahead of us.”
