Tottenham and Leeds Share Points After Maddison’s Return
Tottenham Hotspur has experienced a positive shift in the Premier League lately, managing a four-game unbeaten streak under the guidance of Roberto De Zerbi.
However, the North London club could not secure a third consecutive win on Monday, as they drew 1-1 with Leeds United at home. James Maddison made his highly anticipated return from a cruciate ligament tear, coming on in the 85th minute. Despite his appearance, he could not influence the match’s outcome, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s penalty ensuring the points were shared.
The game turned on a controversial moment involving Mathys Tel, who received a rating of 6/10 for his performance. The Frenchman opened the scoring with an impressive goal from outside the box in the 49th minute. After a corner was cleared, he controlled the ball skillfully before curling it past an outstretched Karl Darlow, igniting celebrations in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
However, his fortune changed dramatically within 20 minutes. In an attempt to clear the ball, Tel’s high foot connected with Ethan Ampadu, resulting in a penalty for Leeds.
Wenham Advocates for Tel’s Support Against Chelsea and Everton
Mixed responses have emerged regarding Tel’s pivotal error that led to Leeds’ equalizer. John Wenham, owner of the popular podcast Lilywhite Rose, expressed his hope that De Zerbi maintains confidence in the young player for upcoming matches against Chelsea and Everton, attributing the mistake to “age and experience.”
“He has shown lots of endeavour so far, but maybe missed that end product; that goal against Leeds was fantastic,” Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“It caused an absolute eruption from the South Stand, not just because of our predicament; people were genuinely happy for him.
“Really unfortunate that later on in the game, he made that mistake, but I put that down to age and inexperience. I know he has played for big clubs, Bayern Munich and Tottenham already, but he just needs consistent game time.
“I hope next season, we can provide him with the platform to play week in, week out, on the left, as we’ve been crying out for someone to grab the position since Son left.
“He got an assist against Aston Villa for Richarlison, then scored against Leeds. If he follows that up with some more goals or assists against Chelsea and Everton, he’ll be in a really good position to establish himself in the team going forward.”
De Zerbi Expresses Confidence in Tel’s Future
Tel has received chances to start and make an impact, particularly following injuries to key players Xavi Simons and Dominic Solanke. The Sarcelles-born talent has generally performed well, with De Zerbi recently affirming his belief in Tel’s abilities and potential.
Following the match against Leeds, De Zerbi revealed that Tel had apologized to his teammates in the locker room. He voiced confidence in the 21-year-old’s capability to bounce back in the remaining matches, commending his attitude and mentality. De Zerbi’s support may uplift Tel leading into the crucial fixture against Chelsea, presenting an excellent chance for the former Bayern starlet to redeem himself with a strong performance at Stamford Bridge.
