Roberto De Zerbi Aims to Sign Brighton’s Carlos Baleba for Tottenham Next Season

Following a dramatic relegation battle that concluded on the final day of the season, Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi has successfully steered the club clear of relegation while condemning London rivals West Ham to drop. As attention turns to next season, the club’s leadership is tasked with equipping De Zerbi with the necessary resources to bolster their competitiveness across all domestic competitions.

Tottenham has already secured agreements to bring in free agents Liverpool-survival-relegation/”>Andy Robertson from Liverpool and Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth, moves anticipated to strengthen their defensive lineup significantly. The North London club has also reignited their interest in Manchester City winger Savinho after previously missing out on his transfer last year.

De Zerbi aims to recruit players who align with his vision and tactical approach. Reports indicate that the 46-year-old is closely monitoring a player from his former club ahead of the summer transfer window.

Roberto De Zerbi Targets Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion

According to a report from The Independent, Tottenham is eyeing a move to sign midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Baleba excelled for Brighton during the 2024/25 season, showcasing his talent after a breakout year at the Amex Stadium. He was close to transferring to Manchester United last summer, but Brighton priced the Red Devils out of a move for the Cameroonian international, who had aspirations of joining the club.

Not securing a move to Old Trafford may have affected Baleba’s form, leading to a lackluster 2025/26 season. The 22-year-old made only 23 starts in 31 Premier League appearances and struggled to deliver expected performances. Despite this, he remains on Manchester United’s radar, while Tottenham has also entered the competition to acquire his services.

Former Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand has described Baleba as a ‘world-class’ player, and his addition could significantly enhance Tottenham’s midfield. His technical skills, energy, and physical presence align with the attributes De Zerbi seeks in central midfielders. The club aims to attract players with high potential, rather than settling for mere safe signings. Baleba possesses the raw talent to emerge as a star with consistent playtime, confidence, and effective guidance.

Having coached Baleba at Brighton, De Zerbi thoroughly understands the midfielder’s strengths and weaknesses. If the manager believes the 22-year-old is compatible with his tactical system, he will need to advocate for his signing within club leadership.

However, it may prove challenging for Tottenham to persuade Brighton to part with Baleba, as the Seagulls aim to maintain their squad’s core after qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League. Moreover, Brighton’s substantial valuation of the young talent could complicate any potential transfer.
