Tottenham Faces Pressure Amid Potential Departure of Mathys Tel
Tottenham Hotspur seeks four points from their final two matches to secure their Premier League status. However, the team may be under significant pressure when they face arch-rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, especially if West Ham secures a win against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday evening.
A defeat at Chelsea, a venue where Spurs have historically struggled, could see them sliding into the relegation zone, raising the stakes as they aim to avoid dropping down to the Championship. While manager Roberto De Zerbi’s priority remains keeping the team in the top flight, preparations for the summer transfer window are already underway behind the scenes.
Should Tottenham face relegation, retaining several high-profile players may prove challenging. One player currently linked with an exit from the club is Mathys Tel.
Mathys Tel Wanted by Serie A Club
Mathys Tel, who recently experienced a rollercoaster performance in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United, is attracting interest from FC Paris. The Ligue 1 club has earmarked the Tottenham winger as a potential star signing this summer, but they may contend with competition from Serie A giants.
According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t La Roma 24), AS Roma has rekindled its interest in Tel. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini has compiled a list of attacking targets for his club, with Tel included.
AS Roma had shown keen interest in bringing the Frenchman to the capital during the January transfer window to boost their attacking options. Though a deal for Tel did not materialize at that time, they signed Donyell Malen on loan from Aston Villa instead. Despite the loan agreement for Malen being activated, Roma remains keen to add Tel to their line-up.
Tel Could Push for an Exit if Tottenham Goes Down
Tel has had difficulty securing a starting position under both Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor. However, since De Zerbi’s appointment, the France Under-21 international has found new opportunities. The Italian manager sought additional pace and variety following injuries to Xavi Simons and Dominic Solanke, and Tel has contributed positively to Tottenham’s recent performances.
While his statistics of four goals and an assist in 29 Premier League appearances may not stand out, Tel brings much more than just numbers to the attack. De Zerbi seems satisfied with Tel’s contributions and has expressed confidence in his ability to rebound from his prior mixed performance against Leeds. Nevertheless, the possibility exists that Spurs might consider offers for the former Bayern Munich player due to his inconsistent displays.
As the situation develops, Tottenham may opt to cash in on Tel while his market value remains robust. Should the unimaginable occur and the team is relegated, it is clear that the versatile winger will look to leave North London, whether on loan or through a permanent transfer.
