As European clubs start planning for the summer, Wout Weghorst’s name is back in the spotlight.
The former Manchester United striker is generating interest for a potential free transfer.
Weghorst may be making a return to Germany, with FC Schalke 04 looking at him for a summer move, according to reports from Voetbal International relayed by GOAL.
The Dutch forward is set to become a free agent when his contract with Ajax ends this season, making him an appealing choice for clubs.
Schalke is not the only club interested; FC Twente and Benfica are also keeping an eye on his situation.
If Schalke secures promotion, their chances could improve, as they currently lead the 2. Bundesliga and aim to return to the top division.
This season, Schalke has had success with seasoned forwards, including Edin Dzeko, who, despite being 40, has scored six goals in eight games since joining during the winter transfer window.
Weghorst would fit a similar profile as an experienced and strong striker with a solid history in the Bundesliga.
The 33-year-old made his mark at Wolfsburg from 2018 to 2022, becoming one of the league’s top scorers, and later returned to Germany on loan at TSG Hoffenheim for the 2023/24 season.
However, his time at Manchester United was quite different.
He joined on loan from Burnley in January 2023, seen as a temporary fix after Cristiano Ronaldo left.
While he contributed in terms of effort and pressing, he only scored three goals before returning at season’s end.
Since then, he has played for Besiktas before moving to Ajax in 2024, further continuing his journey across Europe’s leagues.
With his contract ending, another move seems likely, and a return to Germany is becoming more probable.
This potential transfer would be another strategic decision by Schalke as they work to strengthen their squad for a possible return to the Bundesliga.
