Tottenham Eyes South American Defensive Reinforcements Amidst Romero Departure
Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly exploring options in the South American market for defensive reinforcements as Cristian Romero appears set to leave the club after this season.
Romero sustained a knee injury during the 1-0 defeat to Sunderland, which has ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign. This injury may mark the end of his tenure at Spurs, with the 2022 World Cup winner contemplating a move, potentially to Barcelona.
With uncertainty surrounding Romero’s future at White Hart Lane, Tottenham has begun identifying centre-back targets ahead of the summer transfer window. Recent reports indicate that Spurs are keen on signing Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo, whose reputation has soared in Serie A following an impressive season.
Another prospect on Tottenham’s radar is Lautaro Rivero from River Plate. The 22-year-old defender has performed exceptionally well and is in contention for Argentina’s World Cup squad, having made 20 appearances this season, scoring once.
Competition Grows for River Plate’s Lautaro Rivero
Rivero has rapidly ascended in the football world, earning a call-up to the national team from relative obscurity. He currently has a €100 million release clause in his contract, and River Plate plans to retain him for the time being.
While Tottenham shows continued interest, they now face competition from Manchester United and Chelsea, both of whom are also pursuing Rivero before the summer transfer window, as reported by GIVEMESPORT.
With Chelsea and Manchester United also on the lookout for defensive bolstering, Rivero’s future seems likely to be in Europe. Chelsea’s shaky defensive performances have been highlighted by their recent 1-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup final, while Manchester United is looking to strengthen their squad for anticipated Champions League matches.
Concerns Over Rivero’s Price Tag
Despite Rivero’s undeniable talent and potential, activating his €100 million release clause may be an impractical venture for Spurs. The club would prefer to secure him for a more reasonable fee, which seems unlikely this summer.
Tottenham does have a promising young centre-back in Luka Vuskovic, currently excelling on loan at SV Hamburger. They plan to welcome him back this summer, and he is eager for regular starting opportunities if he stays at the club.
Instead of investing significantly in an unproven South American prospect, manager Roberto De Zerbi may consider utilizing Vuskovic as a solution to replace Romero.
