Micky van de Ven’s Future at Tottenham Remains Uncertain Amid Interest from Manchester United

A month ago, Micky van de Ven’s future at Tottenham appeared dire, mirroring the club’s precarious league position. TEAMtalk reported in April that the 25-year-old had expressed a desire to leave Spurs, irrespective of relegation threats, and that contract discussions had been halted. During this time, Real Madrid was reportedly monitoring his situation to potentially replace defenders David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger. This scenario suggested a player who had mentally distanced himself from the club.

However, according to GMS senior correspondent Ben Jacobs, this portrayal was misleading. Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jacobs stated that Van de Ven is now open to signing a new deal with Tottenham if the club manages to maintain its Premier League status. The significant factor, Jacobs notes, is manager Roberto De Zerbi.

De Zerbi’s appointment in late March has reportedly improved morale within the club, with Van de Ven expressing satisfaction in working under him. The underlying implication is clear: the manager brought in to help the team avoid relegation may also secure the future of their most valuable player.

He said: “You have a profile like Micky Van de Ven that Spurs really want to fight to keep if they go down. That’s going to be very difficult, but I tell you something, if Tottenham stay up, my information is that Micky Van de Ven is extremely open to signing a new deal.”

The timing of this update is crucial, especially as Manchester United has shown interest. Recent reports indicate that United is prepared to offer £60 million for Van de Ven this summer, fitting the profile that manager Michael Carrick seeks as he builds his roster. Van de Ven joined Tottenham from Wolfsburg for £43 million in August 2023, with his contract extending until the summer of 2029, giving Spurs leverage in potential negotiations. However, that leverage is only meaningful if the player chooses to remain.

Micky van de Ven aside, Cristian Romero to still leave Tottenham?

Jacobs added a noteworthy detail: even if Van de Ven signs an extension, Cristian Romero is still predicted to depart. He stated:

“Now he’s very happy with Roberto De Zerbi as manager, and De Zerbi coming in has enhanced the chances of Tottenham staying up, that Van de Ven signs a new deal, and [Cristian] Romero still goes.”

The Argentine center-back has been linked with a move away for nearly a year, and De Zerbi’s arrival has seemingly done little to alter that prospect. For Tottenham, the priority remains Van de Ven, and other considerations will follow. The next three league matches will determine whether these discussions bear fruit.
