Tunisia’s hopes in the World Cup have been dashed as the Eagles of Carthage face elimination from the tournament taking place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Despite the recent appointment of Hervé Renard as head coach, the team has suffered consecutive defeats in Group F.
The Tunisian side was overwhelmed in their opening match, losing 5–1 to Sweden, followed by a 4–0 defeat against Japan in their second group stage encounter. These heavy losses have left Tunisia with no chance to advance in the competition.
This performance marks Tunisia as the second African nation to concede at least nine goals in their first two World Cup matches, following Zaire, which allowed 11 goals in 1974. Tunisia has also become the first team since Greece in 1994 to lose both of their opening matches in the tournament by a margin of four goals.
