In 2018, UEFA launched the Nations League in an effort to substitute competitive games between nations with competence for international friendly matches. The tournament has been divided into four leagues (A, B, C, and D) since the 2020–21 season. The top three leagues are split into four groups of four teams, while League D has two groups of seven.
England was placed in a group with Italy, Hungary, and Germany for the 2022–2023 edition
The top footballing nations in Europe compete in League A, although clubs are demoted to League B if they place last in their group of four. This complicated system became easy to understand when England was placed in a group with Italy, Hungary, and Germany for the 2022–2023 edition.
At Puskas Arena, the Three Lions began their group match against Hungary and were penalized for a lackluster performance as Dominik Szoboszlai‘s penalty in the 66th minute was the game’s lone goal. Although they played better in their following two games, drawing with Germany and Italy, Southgate’s team fell to Hungary again on June 14. The 1966 World Cup winners lost 4-0 at Molineux Stadium this time, which was the first time they had lost four straight games since 2014.

When England traveled to the San Siro for their next group stage match, things didn’t go any better. Giacomo Raspadori scored in the 68th minute, but England was unable to reply, and they were relegated to UEFA Nations League B.
Southgate Comments
After the match, Southgate said:
“I understand the reaction at the end. That’s the results that we have had in this competition. It is an understandable emotional reaction.
“Tonight, we haven’t got the result we needed or wanted so we are in a run of bad results but it is for us to put that right.”
The Three Lions had a thrilling six-goal contest against Germany at Wembley Stadium, putting up a better performance in their last Nations League A group match. After overcoming a 2-0 deficit, England appeared to be on their way to winning for the first time in six games, but a late goal from Kai Havertz kept them from winning all three points.
Now that they have topped the League B Group, they will feature in the next season as League A members and will have a chance of qualifying for the knockouts rounds as well.
